What are food miles?

Food being transport via lorry Food miles represent the time and distance involved in getting the product from the farmer or producer to it's arrival on the plate of the customer. Food miles are important for lots of reasons. Food is better when it is at its freshest; it retains more of its goodness and usually tastes much better too. The shorter the distance between the producer and the rest of the supply chain, the less time is taken. Also the less distance the food has to travel, the less impact it has on the environment - less distance means less transport fuel and less pollution. We believe that it must be better for everyone if we source from UK suppliers rather than from suppliers on the other side of the world. If you would like more information on food miles, why not read the information in the following links:

Why do you prefer to use UK and EU birds?

We prefer to use UK-sourced birds as we believe that they have a better flavour than birds imported from Brazil and Thailand. If our customers prefer us to use EU-sourced birds, we are happy to work with our European suppliers too. We have an excellent and longstanding relationship with all of our supply partners and their European location means that we can have regular meetings to discuss new product development ideas.

We also believe that more companies ought to support the UK economy and source their ingredients from local suppliers. We support the growing campaign to reduce food miles and work with suppliers to promote this concept.
